Wind Power Systems
THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE WIND!!

Wind Power Basics
We love wind power! Just like solar electricity, wind energy can be used to directly power a load, turn a utility meter backwards or can be stored in batteries for later use. In fact, wind is really a form of solar energy produced by uneven heating of the earth's surface. Wind power is clean, quiet and inexhaustible!! Although often less predictable than solar, it is available for more hours a day when your solar panels are "asleep."
Wind generators can be used alone or in a "hybrid" system. Hybrid systems of wind and solar are especially effective in the winter when wind can help provide winter backup of solar systems.
Is Wind Power For You?
If you are considering a wind unit, it is critical to determine if you have the right kind and amount of wind. Some sites do not have enough, while some have winds that are too gusty or turbulent. A wind plant should be located within 100 feet of the battery bank, if possible, to avoid voltage loss. Further distances mean large wire and higher installation costs.
It is critical that the wind machine received clean wind! The generator should be mounted at least 30 feet above anything within 500 feet. The higher you go the more power you will make. Do not scrimp on your tower.
There is a 30% Federal Tax Credit on wind turbines.
BWC XL.1 Turbine

Bergey Windpower's newest product is the 1,000 Watt BWC XL.1. With a rotor diameter of 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) and a peak output of approximately 1,600 Watts, the XL.1 is intended for the off-grid home market.
The XL.1 combines a number of advanced technical features, including an airfoil that provides the highest efficiency in a small wind turbine at a cost of energy 10% lower than the current price leader.
The XL.1 is an up-wind, horizontal-axis, three-bladed turbine. The blades are pultruded fiberglass, a material that is over ten times stronger than the injection-molded plastic used on most small wind turbines.
The L.1 includes the BWC Power Center controller which controls battery charging, has a low-end boost for superior low wind speed performance, "slow-mode" rotor idling when the batteries are full, an electrical braking system, and even includes a 30A controller for the solar modules that are often a part of a complete hybrid system.
Check out the wind tower kits below. They make installation much simpler and safer and come with complete instructions.
There is a 5 year warranty on the XL.1.

Whisper Wind Generator
Whisper Wind Generators have been manufactured since 1978. The Whisper's new look features a cast aluminum frame and smooth, quiet composite blades. The exclusive, side-furling, Angle-Governor protects the turbine in high winds by turning the blades and alternator out of the wind, while still allowing power production.
Whisper's Controller shuts down the turbine when batteries are full. The regular type display shows total kilowatt hours, peak amps and is adjustable from 12-48 volts. We have had a Whisper in operation since 1994 without a repair. A great wind generator!
5-year warranty.

Whisper 100 Wind Generator
The Whisper 100 is designed to operate in a site with wind speed averages of 12 mph and greater. It delivers 900 watts peak power at 28 mph (12.5 m/s).
It can provide 100+ kWh per month, 3.4 kWh per day, in a 12 mph average wind speed location. The 100, with its 7 ft (2.1 m) rotor diameter and 40 sq. ft. swept area, is rugged enough for extreme environments.
The 3-blade design lasts longer and is more stable in turbulent wind. The Marine version is sealed and powder-coated for use in coastal and nautical environments.

Whisper 200 Wind Generator
The Whisper 200 is designed for the user who lives in low to moderate wind speed averages (less than 12 mph). The bigger brother to the 100, the 200 features a 10 ft (3.1 m) 3-blade rotor diameter and an 80 sq. ft. swept area that provides the user with greater output at low wind speed averages.
The 200 has twice the swept blade area, providing double the potential energy, compared to the 100. It delivers 1000 watts peak power at 28 mph (12.5 m/s), but has a higher output than the 100 at lower wind speeds.

Whisper 500 Wind Generator
The Whisper 500 is a 3000-watt rated turbine that will deliver in excess of 500 kWh per month in a 12 mph wind. This machine has a 14-foot, 2 blade rotor providing 500 sq. ft. of swept area.
It features a handmade fiberglass and foam core blade for smooth, high efficiency operation and low wind start-up. It also incorporates the patented "angle governor" designed for quiet operation in farms, backup power and remote homes with large energy demands.
The Whisper 500 comes in two boxes and is shipped truck freight.
The Whisper 500 is available in 24-volt and 48-volt versions.

GRID-TIED WIND
Skystream 3.7 Utility-Tied
The Skystream 3.7 is a new generation residential wind generator that hooks up to your utility meter to reduce or eliminate your monthly electrical bill. It's the first all-inclusive UL Listed wind generator (with controls and inverter built-in) designed to provide quiet, clean eletricity in very low winds.
The Skystream is ideal for residential homes and small businesses. Skystream connects directly to your home. When the wind is blowing, your home is powered (in part) by Skystream; when it's not, your home is seamlessly powered by your utility, as usual.
During periods of strong winds, Skystream can actually produce excess electricity causing your utility meter to spin backwards - giving you credit for a later date.
Estimated energy production is 400 kWh per month in a 12 mph wind. If your site fits in the following criteria, Southwest Windpower's Skystream 3.7 may work for you:

At least 10 mph average wind speed (best results at 12 mph or more). Your property is at least a half acre and has unobstructed views. The local zoning allows a structure that is at least 42' tall. Your utility has an existing interconnection agreement for homeowners.
With a rated capacity of 1.8 kW, Skystream can provide anywhere from 40 to 100 percent of the total energy needs of a household or small business.
There's a 30% Federal Tax Credit for wind generators which reduces your price to just $3,780.00!
